After numerous upsets and weird wins, we are getting to the fag-end of the tournament and yet, once the championships ends we all will still be scratching our heads. Such is the sport and respect to those still standing.
So here goes my summary of what has happened and what will be:
¨ Nadal isn’t 100% and although Steve Darcis played the match of his life, its pretty obvious that Nadal was suffering from his grueling clay season. I hope Rafa takes a break and tries to aim for the US Open.
¨ Roger Federer, the undisputed “King of Grass” – or is he? Well Stakhovsky not only ended Federer’s 36 consecutive QF’s streak but also cut the maestro down to size. This season Roger has looked terrible in all departments. Many have claimed that his poor season is due to his age, but I reckon its because of his new schedule and the modifications he has added to his game. It’s just not working against the likes of Berdych, Nadal ,Murray and Djokovic.
¨ Azarenka and Sharapova need to complain less about their surroundings and concentrate more on their games. Azarenka played a bad French Open semi’s against masha, but the same can be said about the latter in her 2nd round loss to the Portugal young player. I see Azarenka doing well at USO, atleast at next year’s Oz Open.
¨ The young guns are just a mixed bag in this championships. Nishikori and Raonic lost to players they should have beaten easily. Dimitrov begs the never ending question : When? But polish player Janowicz has done really well reaching the semi’s and facing home favourite – Murray. I see Kai and Jerzy doing well during the hard-court season, but who knows, this is a funny sport.
¨ Serena vs Sabine – match of the championships. Clean winners and super serving from the 16-time grand slam winner and “Miss sunshine”. Sabine proved everyone wrong when she thumped the five time Wimbledon champ in the 3rd set. I hope Serena wins a few more majors ( 4 more would equal Graf’s tally) and I see her a strong favourite for the US Open. If Sabine can stay healthy and build her overall game, she has a real shot at breaking into the top 4.
¨ Murray-Djokovic : the new rivalry?
Certainly looks so, with Nadal dominant primarily on his favourite clay surface and Federer looking listless, it would seem these two guys are on collision course to the finals for just the second time this year at a major finals. Djokovic clearly deserves his number one status but I cant help wondering how he tends to lose certain matches or sets which he should be winning with ease. Murray can send a big christamas card to Ivan Lendll for evolving his game to the next level. If his mental strength can be improved it would elevate his game to another level and I’m sure he would be a real contender for all upcoming majors.
So there goes my summary of this year’s Championships and on to the predictions for the SF:
Ladies’ – Semi Finals
Lisicki (GER) beats Radwanska (POL) 6-3,5-7,6-4
Bartoli (FRA) beats Flipkens (BEL) 7-5,6-4
Ladies’ – Finals
Lisicki (GER) beats Bartoli (FRA) 6-4,6-3

Djokovic (SRB) beats Del Potro (ARG) 7-6,6-4,6-3
